Bern Gas phase monosaccharides (2-deoxyribose, ribose, arabinose, xylose, lyxose, glucose galactose, fructose, and tagatose), generated by laser desorption of solid sample pellets, are ionized with extreme ultraviolet photons (EUV, 46.9 nm, 26.44 eV). The resulting fragment ions are analyzed using a time of flight mass spectrometer. All aldoses yield identical fragment ions regardless of size, and ketoses, while also generating same ions as aldoses, yields additional features. Extensive fragmentation of the monosaccharides is the result the EUV photons ionizing various inner valence orbitals. The observed fragmentation patterns are not dependent upon hydrogen bonding structure or OH group orientation. 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Selective separation of ketoses and aldoses by chromatography on a polyethyleneimine ion exchanger

One of serious problems of preparative carbohydrate chemistry is the separation of aldoses from ketoses. Of a large number of chromatographic procedures for separation of aldoses and ketoses described in the literature, only the use of anion exchangers in the bisulfite form afforded satisfactory resolution. Samuelson and Sjoström [1] separated fructose from glucose and mannose on a Dowex 2 ion-...

Active Transport into the Human Erythrocyte: Evidence from Comparative Kinetics and Competition among Monosaccharides

1. Applicability of the previously postulated active transport system for conveying glucose into the human red cell was tested in connection with a number of related substances, comprising 6-carbon aldoses and ketoses, 5-carbon aldoses, and 5- or 6-carbon polyhydric alcohols. 2. The alcohols did not perceptibly penetrate the cells; all the sugars penetrated, the rates differing, but all of the ...

Production of rare sugars from common sugars in subcritical aqueous ethanol.

A new isomerization reaction was developed to synthesize rare ketoses. D-tagatose, D-xylulose, and D-ribulose were obtained in the maximum yields of 24%, 38%, and 40%, respectively, from the corresponding aldoses, D-galactose, D-xylose, and D-ribose, by treating the aldoses with 80% (v/v) subcritical aqueous ethanol at 180°C. The maximum productivity of D-tagatose was ca. 80 g/(Lh). Increasing ...

Catalytic Isomerization of Biomass‐Derived Aldoses: A Review

Selected aldohexoses (D-glucose, D-mannose, and D-galactose) and aldopentoses (D-xylose, L-arabinose, and D-ribose) are readily available components of biopolymers. Isomerization reactions of these substances are very attractive as carbon-efficient processes to broaden the portfolio of abundant monosaccharides. This review focuses on the chemocatalytic isomerization of aldoses into the correspo...

Structure of saccharides

Carbohydrates exist as aldoses, which are polyhydroxyaldehydes, and ketoses, being polyhydroxyketones. Their open–chain forms can be suitably represented by Fischer projections. Aldoses and ketoses can be of different chain length and are all derived from glyceraldehyde. A formal insertion of a stereogenic (HCOH)–group between the carbonyl carbon atom and the α–C–atom of glyceraldehyde leads to...
